Feb. 28 MAN WHO SPLIT THE ATOM: LORD RUTHERFORD OM. FRS born in Nelson, New Zealand, in 1871 and died at the age of 66. Physicist, pre-eminent in the field of atomic research. His experiments, conducted at Montreal, Manchester and at the famous Cavondish Laboratory at Cambridge, attracted brillient scientist from all over the world His nucelar theory of the stom which he announced in 1911 was followed in 1919 by his splitting the stom. His work paved the way for future nuclear research
