Feb. 26 World's Most Powerful Microscope. The Three million volt electron microscope the biggest and most powerful in the world has been developed in a joint effort by Hitachi Ltd. and Osaka University in Japan. The giant microscope is 12 meters high, weighs 67 tons, and has a magnification up to 100, 000 times. The accelerating voltage is 3 million volts. A special feature is a closed cell device in which bacteria and living organic cells can float in an environmental air, gas or liquid body. Crystallization of molten metal specimens is shielded with a 700 mm thick flint glass window to protect researcher from radio active X Ray bombardment. The giant microscope will be shown at the 7th International Electron Microscope Conference in Grenoble, France at the beginning of September, and later installed at Osaka University. Photo Shows: The huge electron microscope, and (A) Bacillus Megaterium, and (B) the bacillus after an hour after warming and germinating (arrows)
