Feb. 28 100th birthday of Fridtjof Nansen The Norwegian polar scientist and statesman Fridtjof Nansen, born on Oct. 10th, 1861 on the estate Stora-Froen Oslo, was the first to cross 1888/89 South Greenland. From 1893 till 1896, he explored the North Polar Sea. From 1901 till 1906, he was the director of the International Laboratories for Oceanography in Oslo. After the first World War, Nansen directed the exchange of prisoners of war, and in 1922 he was awarded the Nobel Prize of Peace. Nansen died on May 13th, 1930 in Lysaker in Norway.
