Feb. 29 St. Luke's Hospital Guildford is the first in Britain to obtain betatron machine the most up to date weapon in the fight against cancer.: The Most up to date weapon in the fight against cancer, the Betatron machine, has been installed at St. Lukes Hospital, Guildford, Survey. This machine, which is the first of its kind in this country, is housed in a radiation-proof building with walls up toeight feet thick in the treatment room. The Betraton project at St.Lukes is entirely due to the drive and foresight of Mr. Jackson. Richmord, director of the hospital's radiotherapy centre. After studying one of the Swiss made machine at Work in Italy he decided that Britain must have one at all costs. Despite the fact that the National Health Service could not provide the money to pay for the machine Mr. Jackson Richmond went ahead and took up an option for the first available Betatron to be produced by the manufactures Brown Noveri Ltd. of Baden, Switzerland. Then came the task of finding the £2000, 000 plus to pay for the machine, its special building and running costs for the first four years of operation. Guildford Hospital's League of Friends set up an Appeals Committe to raise the sum by public subscription. The Hon. Angusivy agreed to become Patron. Money poured in at the rate of £275 per day until a total of £215, 000 had been raised thanks to Donkey Berby, fetes, jumble sales and other good works. It is hoped to trest 50 patients a day, mainly from the south of England but also from other parts of the country
