Mar. 31 Madison, Wis - Joshua Lederberg has achieved recognition as one of the world's outstanding young geneticists for his work demonstrating that bacteria possess mechanisms for sexual recombination a method of exchanging genetic material (chromosomes) similar in fundamental respects to higher organisms. The work was conducted in cooperation with Edward L. Tatum, then at Yale and more recently of Stanford and currently of the Rocketfeller Institute. It has long been known that bacteria reproduce by simple cell division each cell divides into two cells, each of which contain a complete set of parental chromosomes
