Mar. 22 HIGH SPEED MACHINING: General Electric researchers Louis E. Hibbs, Jr. (right) and William R. Reed, Jr. make sparks fly as one of GE's new cutting tools peels metal off a superhard jet engine alloy at speeds up to 800 surface feet per minute (sfpm). Normal cutting speeds are only 120 sfpm. GE's new cutting tool is made from thousands of tiny crystals of BORAZON cubic boron nitride, a manufactured material second in hardness only to diamond. It is designed to machine hardened steels, chilled cast iron, and nickel-based superalloys at high speeds and low wear. A second new GE cutting tool announced today is fabricated from tiny crystals of Man-Made diamond abrasive, and is expected to provide manufacturers with dramatic increases in cutting speeds on abrasive non-ferrous alloys, hard ceramics, and fiberglass-reinforced composites. The tools were invented by scientists at the GE Research and Development Center, Schenectady, N.Y. Although the new cutting tool inserts are not commercially available yet, and no price has been established, sample quantities are being manufactured by GE's Specialty Materials Department, Worthington, Ohio, for use in an extensive field testing operation, which is being conducted in cooperation with GE's Carboloy Systems Department, Detroit, Michigan
