Mar. 22 Photo Shows An unusual model pictured at today Press Preview is the magnetospheric model based on Dungey theory of the interaction of the magnetized solar wind plasma with the earth magnetic field. The field-line pattern is assumed to resemble the superposition of two simple vacuum fields (a) A dipole field, corresponding to the earth field (b) An external uniform field corresponding to the interplanetary (solar-wind) field. When the interplanetary field has a southward component (as in the model) two neutral points appear. Field lines travelling with the solar wind connect to the geomagnetic field at the forward neutral point, are carried past the earth in a connected state, and disconnect at the tail neutral point. In this connected state, the earth polar region are accessible to the interplanetary medium along field lines. The secondary magnetic fields associated with these currents distort the magnetosphere, comparing it on the Dayside, and extending it into a tail on the nightaide
