Mar. 27 John Bardeen: On the morning John Bardeen won his second Nobel Prize for Physics, he was un able to get his home's electronically controlled garage door open a door operated by a device made possible by the invention of the transistor, for which he won his first Nobel. His University of Illinois colleagues had to sen an automobile to Dr. bardeens; home to take him to the campus for a champagne toast. The 64-year-old professor of physics is described by his colleagues as a blackboard physicist a theorotician. His students call him Whispering John because of his extremely soft-spoken manner
