Apr. 17 Largest Radio Telescope in the world for scientific research into the atmosphere.: The largest Radio Telescope in the World - was shown to the press yesterday for the first time. Built ar Jodrell Bank, Cheshire for Manchester University - at a cost of about £650, 000 - it consists of a gigantic cooper mesh bowl weighing 750 tons and suspended between two towers 180 ft. high. Funds for its construction were provided by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Nuffield Foundation. The diameter of the bowl is 250 ft - and the aerial masts are 62 1/2 ft. high. The total weight of the moving parts is 2, 000 tons. It will be used for the investigation by scientists of the arrival of meteors into the earth's atmosphere - the behaviors of the aurora borealis etc. Photo shows the interior of the modern control room from which the giant Radio telescope is operated.
