Apr. 17 New Laser Concept, called a Mini-Face Pumped Laser, has been developed at the General Electric Research and Development center to provider a high brightness laser beam in high average power operation. Shown with a developmental model of device called the Big Mini-Fpl is Dr. Leonard M. Goldman, one of the group who worked on the project. This version of the new concept has produced 47 watts average output in Q-switched operation. This is believed to be the highest such output for a glass laser. Prisms visible at near end of device permit laser beam to be folded in order to make several passes through the wide slab of laser before exiting
