Sep. 09, 1961 - Testing capsule with ion engine: In the USA, the development has started of a pay-load capsule for flight tests of electrical propulsion engines. Already late 1962, the first test capsule which is to carry two ion engines is to be launched from Wallops islands by a vertically starting four-stage Scout Rocket to an altitude of about 6000 km. In the opinion of experts, this is a major step int he developments of propulsion systems for manned and instrumented interplanetary spacecraft.
