Oct. 29, 1963 - 29-10-63 New hope for blood cancer cure 38-year old professor Emery Gellert, head of the chemistry department of Wollongong University College in Australia may have made an important break-through in cancer research. He has discovered a compound extracted from a rare vine found mainly in Northern Queensland which has proved highly successful in the treatment of leukemia in animals. It is not yet proved to be successful with humans although tests so far have been very encouraging. It takes 100 lb. of the vine to produce one gram of the compound, but he is hoping to produce the compound synthetically although shortage of finance is his biggest problem at the moment.
