May 05, 1963 - Orinthopter Man. 32-year-old Alan Stewart of Greenhill, Sheffield, is making a bid to win the £5, 000 prize offered by the Aeronautical Society of Great Britain for the first man-powered flight of one mile. The machine is designed yo imitate the movement of a bird in flight by moving its wings up and down and forward and backward by means of furious pedalling.
