May 05, 1963 - Wasp factory By the fight against the shield- louse the Landesanstalt fur Pflanzenschutz ( = National - Institution for protection of plants) in Stuttgart could note down the first visible results. The shield - louse, brought to Germany some years ago from the United States of America, prefers the apple- plantations at the Rhine. Apple trees taken by shield- louses after a short time are only unfruitable arid plants. At the instigation of Dr. Klett, president of the Institution for protection of plants, from America been imported the native enemy of the shield- louses, which could not be find in Germany. It is the little Ichneumon- fly, who lays its eggs into the louses. The coming out larvas are consuming the louses from the inside, To be able to dispose about enough wasps in Stuttgart has been erected also called wasp - factory'. On melons brought from France, the shield louses are bred. To these louses the ichneumon flys are set to breed themselves. Thecoming out wasps are collected and are then set off into the apple plantation. at first in the district of Heidelberg which are befallen by shield louses. In the Defence district of the wasps squadrons till now about 25% of all shield louses are taken by ichneumon flys.
