Jun. 06, 1964 - Press Visit To Culham Laboratory. Culham Laboratory is the U.K.A.E.A. Centre for plasma and physics and fusion research - the study of the state of matter at temperatures of up to hundreds of millions of degrees Centigrade, and the problems involved. The ultimate aim is to apply this research to combining the nuclei of Deuterium (heavy Hydrogen) of which there is an almost unlimited supply in the sea, to produce a source of power. Photo Shows:- Physicist David Dancy checks over one of the triggering mechanisms on the Thetatron. 896 capacitors have to be discharged simultaneously to give a very powerful magnetic field. The assembly is being used to study the stability and containment of the hot plasma which it produces in a gas-fill tube encircled with the magnetic field. It gives a temperature of some 5, 000, 000 deg C
