Jun. 06, 1964 - Press visit to Culham Laboratory.: Culham Laboratory is the U.K.A.E.A. Centre for plasma physics and fusion research - the study of the state of matter at temperatures of up to hundreds of millions of degrees Centigrade, and the problems involved. The ultimate aim is to apply this research to combining the nuclei of Deuterium (heavy Hydorgen) of which there is an almost unlimited supply in the sea, to produce a source of power. Photo shows Senior Experimental Officer W.H.F. Earl carries out an experiment to measure the 4mm microwave radiation from an ordinary fluorescent tube - probably the most common example of matter in a plasmic state. From the radiation can be measure the density and temperature of the plasma - although not hot to the hand, the electrons are at a temperature of about 15, 000 deg C
