Aug. 08, 1966 - U.K.A.E.A. To Build Scientific Payload For Astronomical Satellite: The European Space Research Organisation (E.S.R.O.), have adopted a British design study for the scientific payload of their first major project - a Large Astronomical Satellite (L.A.S.) The other design studies were submitted by European national groups. The winning design study was submitted by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. It was prepared by a team in which staff from the Culham Laboratory, the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston, the Space Department of the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, and the Physics Department of the University College, London, all co-operated under the leadership of Dr. R. Wilson of Culham. Photo shows Full-scale model of the experimental payload proposed for ESRO's Large Astronomical Satellite. The central concave mirror and the small convex mirror near the top of the assembly act as a Cassegrain telescope. The whole unit is pointed towards a distant source and the collected radiation is focussed by the telescope on to the spctographic equipment below the concave mirror. A combined U.K.-European team, formed mainly from existing staff of the Authority at their Culham and Aldermaston establishments, will undertake the design, development, production and testing of the experimental satellite under a contract between E.S.R.O. and the U.K. A.E.A. It will form part of the one-ten satellite to be launched in 1971 by the Europe-1 rocket
