May 05, 1967 - The Biggest Telescope In Western Europe: The finishing touches are being put to the giant telescope, named Sir Isaac Newton - at the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Hurstmonceaux, Sussex. It is the biggest telescope in Western Europe - it's moving parts weigh 87 tons. The telescope's mirror - a disc of glass 8ft. 2ins. wide - will collect light from stars and galaxies millions of miles out in Space - and focus it on to photographic plates.
