Oct. 10, 1966 - One man submarine Built for £35. Mr. George Cooke yesterday tried out a new piece of farming equipment a one-man submarine. Mr. Cooke, an electronics engineer at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, built it in his front room for £35. The fact that it look like an overgrown sardine tin is accidental, but to the point. Because the submarine, Explorer I, could also be described as a new piece of fishing equipment. Mr. Cooke put his invention through its diving trials in a pond at Black Park, near Slough, Bucks, yesterday, wearing a frogman suit because Explorer I has no lid. It went down to three fathoms and behaved just as its inventor had planned and hoped. His campaign to persuade the Government to show more interest in under-water science had taken a great plunge forward. Mr. Cooke wants Britain to go in for fish farming. Submarines like his, he says would be the Land-Rovers of the under-water farmers.
