Mar. 28, 1967 - Commissioning Of Circulating Water Channel At The National Physics Laboratory Ship Division - Feltham: The new circulating Water Channel which has been built by the Ministery of Public Building and Works at Feltham, was commissioned today by Vice-Admiral Sir Frank Mason. It is by far the largest installation of its kind in Europe. Its purpose is to permit the study of the flow of water around ship models and other bodies to take place in ideal conditions. The convential model-towing tank has serious disadvantages in this respect observation of flow is difficult to arrange, and the steady running time at the high speeds is limited inherently by the length of the tank. The new circulating water channel permits the model to be held stationary while the flow of water is directed past it in a smooth and precisely controlled manner. Recirculation of the water makes runs of unlimited time possible, while observation of the model can be made in ideal conditions through large windows provided in the working section of the channel. Photo Shows: Observation of a model of a tanker, representing 100, 000-tons, under test, can he viewed from side windows, and also from underneath the tank. This picture shows the tanker model under test as seen from underneath the tank
