1970 - Europe's first atomic powered Dog: A labrador called Goldie is Europe's first atomic powered dog, and carries hope for thousands of British heart patients. Goldie, a two-year old Golden Labrador has a pacemaker machine fitted against her heart. The machine is powered by pellet of raio-active plutonium core of the H-bomb and the nuclear fuel for the latest atomic power stations. The pacemaker gives Goldie's heart an electric shock 100 times a minute to keep it beating regularly. The device was developed after three years of work by doctors at the National Heart Hospital and the Institute of Cardiology and by scientists from the Atomic Energy Authorioty's research centres at Aldermaston and Harwell. Goldie, whose heart is normal, was given her pacemaker in half-hour operation carried out By Mr. Peter Lord at the Roayl College of Surgeons. The Operation is trial to ensure the battery works perfectly.
