Nov. 11, 1969 - Enzyme Technology Research At University College: The Science Research Council has made a grant of200, 000 to the Chemical Engineering Department of University College, London, to support a five-year programme of research on enzyme technology. Enzymes are natural proteins of immense catalytic power. At present only a small number of the known thousand or so enzymes catalysing different processes are being fully utilised. The majority of enzymes are retained within living cells and in order to be used must be released and separated from one another. The techniques of separation though well characterised on a laboratory scale have still to be fully developed at the industrial level. The delicate molecular nature of many enzymes can be disadvantage in practical usage. It may be overcome by attaching them to solid supports. Basic study of such insolubilised - enzymes is laying the foundation for their use in industrial reactors.
