Jan. 01, 1970 - Europe's first semen bank for man....has been established in Bremen. The Bremen physician and researcher Dr. Kurt Sokol, who is one of the pioneers for artificial insemination in human medicine of Germany, is the founder and owner of this establishment. After experiments in veterinary surgery, he developped the freezing of the semen in his Bremen research station for physical medicine with private funds. Within this freezing process, the semen which is chemically prepared beforehand, is freezed to 196 degrees below zero (Centigrades) and can thus be preserved for decades. Dr. Sokol defends himself against reproaches that say he would practise a sort of human breeding by his selecting the semen donors. He considers his task to be only to help married couples, for whom all the previous treatments were without success, to get a child. The donor of the semen remains unknown to the receiver and her husband for ever. O.p.s.
