Feb. 02, 1974 - The first simple and inexpensive technique for fabricating ceramic parts from silicon carbide, one of the most heat resistant materials known to man, has been developed at the general electric research and development center, Schenectady, N.Y. A turbine vane made from silicon carbide is held by Dr. Dvante Prochazka, inventor of the process, above the vacuum furnace in which it was densified by sintering. The operating temperature of a gas turbine fitted with silicon carbide parts could be raised to temperature higher than 2500 F, increasing its efficiency by several percent. An increase of only two percentage pints would be equivalent to a six percent reduction in fuel consumption
