1972 - The World's most powerful radio transmitting Tube. : San Carlos, Calif. Apr. 11 -- The world's most powerful radio transmitting tube generates two million watts output-more than two times the power of all the AM, FM and television stations in New York City. Here an engineer at the EIMAC Division of Varian Associates inspects the 175pound high-power tetrode after tests in a special amplifier. BIMAC, the largest manufacturer of power tubes, developed the new tube for use in highpower transmitters in medium-and high-frequency broadcast service (such as by government broad-casters covering vast geographical areas) and for industrial and scientific uses as a 1, 000-ampere, 60-kilovolt switch, Costing 0, 000 each, the new two-megawatt tubes permit a single stage amplifier to reach an output power level of 2, 500 kilowatts, five times more powerful than any previous single amplifier ever built
