This white-hot stream of ionized gases, known as a plasma, plays a key part in a newly developed process for protecting gas turbine buckets from hot corrosion - a severe problem that has plagued the gas turbine industry for more than a quarter century. Created by a high energy spray gun inside a special low-pressure chamber, the plasma serves as a carrier for a new protective coating invented by metallurgists at the General Electric Research and Development Center, Schenectady, N.Y. The coating materiel, in powdered form, is blown into the spray nozzle where it melts instantly. The resulting molten metal is then carried to the bucket by the hot plasma stream, which is passed back and forth across the airfoil surface several times to achieve the desired coating buildup
