Jun. 06, 1959 - Opening of the Warren Spring Laboratory. Research into Atmospheric pollution etc.: The New Warren Spring Laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research was opened at Stevenage yesterday by Lord Hailsham, Lord President of the Council. The initial programme of the laboratory includes work of mineral processing the synthesis of oils and chemicals from carbon monoxide and hydrogen and research aimed at the suppression of atmospheric pollution. Photo shows the synthesis of oil from coal at the laboratory by the Fishcer Tropsche Synthesis, whereby a geiger counter moves up and down the outside of the reaction chamber metering the contents
