Three doubles for Julie Andrews in Star film
Jul. 07, 1968 - They doubled for Julie Andrews at various ages in Star': Julie Andrews did all her own stunts for Star, the film story of Gertrude Lawrence which has its premiere on Thursday, July 18 at the Dominion. It included circus trapeze work and a swim in icy waters. But there were some shots she felt unqualified to handle, and we report that doubles, not Julie Andrews, portray Gertrude Lawrence from the ages of 6 to 14. Young actresses were chosen for the roles by director Robert Wise from acting schools in London. Three of the girls were pictured today in London. They are Penny Francis, who plays Gertie at six (born in London, now aged 10); Kim McCarthy, who plays her at eight. (Born in London now aged 10); and Josephine Gillick, who plays her at 11. (Born in London of Irish parents, Now aged 12). Photo shows in happy spirits in the park today are (L to R) Penny Francis; Josephine Gillick and Kim McCarthy
