Douglas Gomez, firearms expert, with amnesty guns, London
Aug. 08, 1965 - 400 guns in Amnesty armoury: All sorts of weapons were piled high on a table in a London office yesterday, just part of a haul of firearms handed in to the police throughout Britain. In London alone 449 weapons have been surrendered since the firearms amnesty a week ago. When the amnesty ends in October, people illegally holding firearms will face heavier fines or a jail sentence. Even so, experts at the Metropolitan Police firearms department do not expect the total national haul to exceed 3, 000 guns. Scotland Yard's chief firearms officer, Mr. Eric Harvey, explained: In the last amnesty we collected a total of 11, 000. That was four years ago.
