1980 - April 26th, 1980: 80th Birthday Of Douglas Sirk: On April 26, 1980, Douglas Sirk will become 80 years old. Born in Hamburg/West Germany under the name Detlef Sierck, the artist belongs to one of the best film regisseurs - he discovered some of the greatest stars. In his beginning he worked in Germany at the theatre - finally as managing director in Leipzig - before he turned to become film regisseur in 1935. Especially by his films Zu neuen Ufern and La Habanera, his actress, Zarah Leander, became a well known star, who had great success in Germany during the years of war. After his emigration to the USA Sierck (now under the name Douglas Sirk) worked as a film author, until he got the chance of directing his first American film in 1942. In the following years he became one of the most successful regisseurs in Hollywood, especially with melodrams Die Wunderbar Macht'.
