Sep. 09, 1961 - Smiling happily is the chairman of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), Dr. Erich Mende after the surprising victory of his party at the election on September 17th, 1961. Now he has reached his aim to break the absolute majority of the Christian Democratic Party. The FDP has gained 5% more votes and has now 66 seats in the new Federal Diet against 41 seats in 1957. Dr. Mende said he would be ready to go into coalition with the CDU/CSU if Professor Erhard becomes the new Federal Chancellor
