: Dr Geoffrey Fisher, Archbishop of Canterbury

Dr Geoffrey Fisher, Archbishop of Canterbury

Feb. 02, 1953 - Archbishop of Canterbury wears his Coronation robe. Gifted from Japan: The Archbishop of Canterbury was at Lambeth Palace this afternoon wearing the cope that he will wear at the Coronation of the Queen. The cope is made of pure Japanese fabrics, silks and brocades by the Brotherhood of St Andrews and was presented to the Archbishop by Bishop Yashiro, the presiding Bishop of the Church of Japan in 1948 as a token of the world fellowship of the Anglican communion. For the Coronation there have been inserted into the cope two large amethyst stones which were worn by Archbishop Howley at the coronation of Queen Victoria. Keystone photo shows closeup of Dr Geoffrey Fisher the Archbishop of Canterbury, wearing the cope at Lambeth Palace this afternoon, showing the two large amethyst stones
