1953 - New Secretary - General of the United Nations. Dr. Dag Hammarskjold. Dr. Dag Hammarskjold Swedish Deputy prime minister, announced today that he would accept the Security council's surprise decision to name him Secretary-General of the United Nations. Russia's agreement to a non-communist candidate broke the deadlock over a successor to Mr. Trygve Lie, who resigned from the $20, 000 a year job last November. Dr. Hammarskjold won his spurs as a trade negotiator of Sweden. He has become the right hand man of the prime minister, Mr. Ocstein under and is among the strongest advocates of maintaining Sweden's traditional neutrality. Photo shows Dr. Dag Hammarskjold
