1953 - New Secretary - General of the United Nations. Dr. Dag Hammarskjold. Dr. Dag Hammarskjold Swedish Deputy prime minister, announced today that he would accept the Security council's surprise decision to name him Secretary-General of the United Nations. Russia's agreement to a non-communist candidate broke the deadlock over a successor to Mr. Trygve Lie, who resigned from the $20, 000 a year job last November. Dr. Hammarskjold won his spurs as a trade negotiator of Sweden.
