DS Grant Smith arresting innocent man, Twickenham

Aug. 08, 1974 - Scotland Yard detective confesses to framing three innocent people. This was the moment a policeman got his man. It was the prelude to a frame-up'. For the man making the arrest is Detective Sergeant Grant Smith who has confessed to planting evidence on suspects to further his career. The scene is Twickenham rugby ground on November 5th, 1969. The young man being held is Mangalsingh Jadeja, a Kenyan Asian, a student at Southampton University at the time. Jadeja, who was taking part in an anti-apartheid demonstration, was later convicted of having an offensive weapon - a knife. He was fined £20 and ordered to pay costs. Detective Sergeant Smith aged 32, admitted that he planted the knife on Jadeja to ensure a conviction. In a statement to his superiors Sgt. Smith has admitted his guilt saying I could not live with my conscience'. A report on the affair has been demanded by the Home Secretary Roy Jenkins.
