July 31, 1937 - Venice, Italy - EDWARD VIII, the Duke of Windsor, had met and fallen in love with a married American woman, Mrs. WALLIS SIMPSON. Edward realized he had to choose between the Crown and Wallis who, as a twice-divorced woman, would not have been acceptable as Queen, so he was titled the Duke of Windsor and they wed.
