Duke of Edinburgh at Herstmonceux, Sussex

Nov. 11, 1958 - The Duke looks at the stars.: Herstmonceux Sussex watched by the astronomer royal, Dr. Richard V. D.R. Wooley, the Duke of Edinburgh gazes into the 26-inch refractor telescope in Dome E. of the Royal Greenwich observatory at Herstmonceux in Sussex during his visit there today. Nearly half a century ago the royal observatory began measuring the distances of the nearer stars. This is still the primary task of the Thompson refracting telescope, which has a F/10 lens 26 inches in diameter. Under the 34 ft. dome in which this instrument is housed, the whole floor can be moves up and down for the convenient handling of its 25 ft. long tube
