May 05, 1953 - Duke of Edinburgh flies from palace in helicopter to review commonwealth troops: the duke of Edinburgh made on historic flight when he took off in a helicopter from the grounds of Buckingham palace. He flew to Pirbright to inspect troops of the commonwealth contingent now in England. never before has anybody taken off from the palace. photo shows the duke of Edinburgh talking to a number of the Gurkha contingent during the review at Pirbright today
