Duke of Edinburgh, nuclear submarine, Barrow-in-Furness
Jun. 06, 1959 - Duke of Edinburgh lays the keel of Britain's first atomic submarine.: H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh performed the ceremony of laying the keel of Britain's first Atomic Submarine at the Barrow in Furness yards of Vickers Armstrong. The craft is the Dreadnought'. The Duke performed the ceremony by switching on a gamma ray housed in a protective leaden box which in turn starts the winch to draw the first 30 ft. circular section of the submarine on the slipway. The Dreadnought will be a super craft capable of seeking out enemy craft at more than 30 knots. She is of 2, 000 tons.
