Dec. 12, 1961 - Tanganyika Gets Independence. Duke Reads The Throne Speech: Great celebrations were held throughout Tanganyika Territory - to mark the granting of Independence during the week-end. The Constitution was formally handed over by Prince Philip during a ceremony in the capital - Dar -Es- Salaam. This Marks the end of 42 years of British rule.
