May 11, 1951 - Paris, France - EDWARD VIII was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions beyond the Seas, King of Ireland, and Emperor of India from the death of his father, George V (1910 36), on 20 January 1936 until his abdication on 11 December 1936. Edward VIII had met and fallen in love with a married American woman, Mrs. Wallis Simpson. Edward realized he had to choose between the Crown and Mrs Simpson who, as a twice-divorced woman, would not have been acceptable as Queen. In 1937, Edward was created Duke of Windsor and married Wallis Simpson in a ceremony in France. Edward VIII is the only British monarch to have voluntarily relinquished the throne.
