Duveen Gallery with Elgin Marbles, British Museum, London

Jun. 06, 1962 - New Home for Greek Marbles: The Gallery presented to the British Museum by the late Lord Duveen of Millbank, containing the sculptures of the Parthenon (the Elgin Marbles) is being officially opened this afternoon by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Elgin Marbles have been cared for the British Museum since 1816, £74, 000 having been spent on acquiring and transporting them to England. The Duveen gallery was completed in 1938 at a cost of £100, 000, seriously damaged by bombing in 1940 and restored last year.
