Earl Mountbatten as First Sea Lord
1955 - Earl Mountbatten Assumes His Duties As First Sea Lord: Earl Mountbatten, 57, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, and uncle of the Duke of Edinburgh, has assumed his duties as First Sea Lord. Until recently he commanded the British Mediterranean Fleet and the Mediterranean naval and air forces of North Atlantic Treaty organization countries. For the last month he has been making a round of inspections of naval bases and Admiralty departments in all parts of the country.
