Elephantine Temples, Egypt

Oct. 10, 1968 - Salvaging the Elephantine Temples: The UNESCO General Assembly is expected to appeal to all the world Governments and Organisations to participate in the salvaging operations of the Elephantine Temples (the Pearl of Egypt), flooded between Aswan and the High Dam. They are being flooded by the Nile waters nine months in the year since the heightening operation of the Aswan Dam in 1902. This led to removing its coloured drawings, and since the construction of the high Dam the Temples have been constantly submerged by water to a third of their height. The foundations have been greatly affected. The UNESCo Executive Council has approved the project set out by the United Arab Republic to dismantle and rebuild these temples in Ejiklka Island, which remains above water-level all the year round. Dr. Hassan Fathy, Director-General of the Egyptian Monuments Dept. estimates cost of the project at some 12-million dollars of which the U.A.R. will pay one third in local currency. work on the project will start early next year and is likely to continue for four years.
