Feb. 29 Viscount Linley to carve a career in wood: Viscount Linley, 18 year old son of Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon, has chosen to follow a career in woodcraft and design when he leaves school this summer. In September he will begin a two-year course at the School for Craftsmen in Wood at Parnham House, a beautiful mansion in the Dorset countryside near Beaminster dating from the reign of Elizabeth I. The school only accommodates about 20 students at a time, and Viscount Linley will be one of only a handful of students selected to begin this year. The school, which currently includes several foreign students, gives the craftsman a complete training in woodworking, design, management and marketing, enabling students to set up their own businesses as self-employed designer-craftsmen. The school's director, John Makepeace, is a distinguished wood designer-crafstman who has established his own furniture workshops within the school, working on commissions with a team of eight assistants. Students on the course are taught by a distiguished staff of visiting lecturers, including some of the world's leading wood craftsmen from Britain and America. In the three years since its foundation (Mr Makepeace bought Parnham House for 100, 000 in 1976) the School has achieved a high standard. With justification it calls itself a school dedicated to excellence'.
