Emil Jannings with dogs, German actor
Jan. 02, 1980 - 30th day of death of Emil Jannings: 30 years ago, January 2nd 1950, died, in Strobl at the Lake Wolfgang/Austria, Emil Jannings (photo shows) him with his dogs on his holding in Strobl) one of the best known German character actors from stage and film. Born at July 26th 1884 in Rorschach/Switzerland he was first cabin boy and then he went as a volunteer to the city-theatre of Goerlitz/West-Germany. At the same time he got first film-offers from well known director Ernst Lubitsch. Now it was no great step for him to become a well known actor and in the silent film he was the leading German character actor. To his greatest roles belong the hall-porter in the film The Last Man (1924), his Tartuffe (1926) in the Murnau-film under the same title and his Professor Unrat (1930) in the film of Josef Sternberg The Blue Angel after the novel of Heinrich Mann. From 1926 til 1929 Jannings went to Hollywood/USA and won in 1927/28 the Oscar for the film The last Command and The Way of all Flesh'. After his return he worked in German sound films
