Emperor of Central Africa, Jean-Bedel Bokassa
Sep. 21, 1979 - Bloodless Coup in Central Africa. Jean Badel Bokassa, tyrannical, self-proclaimed Emperor of the Central African Empire, has been overthrown in a bloodless coup by David Dacko, himself a former president who was overthrown by Bokassa in 1965. French troops are reported to be on the way to the capital Bangui to ensure a peaceful transfer of power in the former French colony. The world was amazed at the lavishness of Bokassa's coronation last year, and horrified at the massacre of 200 children recently in which this one-time sergeant in the French colonial army personally participated.
