Erich Nebel rejected as male midwife, Wiesbaden, Germany
Nov. 11, 1970 - Man refused as midwife : For the present, the German Erich Nebel (Wiesbaden) has failed as masculine midwife. On November 3rd, 1970, the court of Wiesbaden refused to allow the 35-year-old projectionist to go to a midwife school in Marburg whereby it referred to a law from 1938 saying that only doctors and women can become obstetricians. the man acting as midwife is considered as intervention into the woman's intimate sphere. In spite of this decision Nebel doesn't see why he shouldn't become a midwife particularly as there is one in Sweden and even five in Iceland. After having tried in vain to talk personally to Frau Kate Strobel, federal minister for health and family, Nebel only sees two possibilities to realize this profession. either to repeal the article concerned or to study medicine which, however, won't be possible as his education is not sufficient. In any case Nebel wants to appeal to the court against this decision
