Oct. 03, 1979 - Former Head Of British Intelligence Sir Maurice Oldfield Takes On The Ira: Sir Maurice Oldfield, 63, the former MI6 chief, has been called back from retirement to take a leading role in the battle against terrorism in Northern Ireland, Sir Maurice who is a bachelor, takes up hi new job next week at a secret operations room in Belfast. Yhis announcement came within hours of the rejection by the provincial Ira of hte Pope's call for the end of violence. Althrough he gave up the past of Director-General of the Secret Intelligence Service only last year. Sir MAurice's cover was blown in 1973, when a german magazine printed a picture of him.
