1961 - Novelist Saves A Burglar From A Prison Sentence: Novelist Ethel Mannin went to court yesterday and explained why she was wearing a tweed suit. It was all because of a man who burgled her house in 1954 and stole articles including a tweed suit belonging to her husband. The suit, she told the Middlesex Quarter Sessions court in London, had great sentimental value to her husband, who is now dead. But when the thief, Frank Arthur Sentece, Ethel Mannin and her husband decided to help him. They visited him in gaol. And when Stanley Heard about the suit he was upset and later sent Ethel Mannin 10 for another. He told Ethel Mannin's husband: I'll go straight until that suit drops off. In 1958, Ethel Mannin's husband died, but instead of getting rid of the suit, she had it made into one for herself. After Stanley was released from gaol last August Ethel Mannin got him a job, which he held until last January. Then he stole property worth 970 in two house raids. Yesterday Stanley pleaded guilty to the raids, but Ethel Mannin, of Wimbledon, told the court: Although there is this evil side, he also has a lot of good in him'.
