Ex-POWs help clear beach for bird sanctuary, Kent

Jan. 27, 1969 - Ex-POWs Defuse Bird Sanctuary: Former prisoners of war, from Germany and the Ukraine, are helping to make a Kentish beach free from the dangerous relics of war training. Denge Beach, near Lydd, is to be a bird sanctuary when all the material of war is discovered and destroyed. Under the supervision of NCOs of the Royal Engineers Bomb Disposal Unit, they are going yard by yard over taped sections of the foreshore, recovering dangerous eroded shells and mortar bombs. The civilian workers, about 100 Ukrainians and five Germans, were recruited for the work after World War II. Capt. Nick Nicholls, commanding No. 2 troop, said: This is not a priority area, so we work here on an on-and-off basis. So far we have picked up about 500 251b. shells
